Amy's 17th B-Day : For her 17th B-day, my daughter Amy, wished for a new guitar. So we went to "The" Guitar Center in Hollywood. Amy lives in Rancho Santa Margarita, about an hour ana half south of Los Angeles ... while there are many Guitar Centers between SM and Hollywood ... "The" Guitar Center is a Mecca for musicians.

Mary Lou Heard's Garden Tour : Mary Lou Heard's Garden Tour is a fund raiser for The Sheepfold and The Orange County Foundation for Oncology Children and Families. Participants open up their gardens for the tour and people donate at each home. This year the gardens ranged from high up Saddleback Mountain in Orange County to the Pacific Ocean in Long Beach (Los Angeles County) and destinations in between ... all toll more than 100 miles and 12 homes.

From the silence of the mountains to the crashing of the sea.

Las Posadas - 2007 : Last Week I hit the opening day of Las Posadas (The Inn) at Olvera Street in Los Angeles. (Olvera Street is the historic "First Street" of Los Angeles.)

Las Posadas is a Mexican reenactment of Joseph and Mary as they sought out shelter. Traditionally the reenactment is carried out all in song with participants and spectators all contributing to the reenactment. Posadas are carried out in Mexico for nine days from December 16 through December 24th.

Shakespeare by the Sea - 2007 : One foot south and 120 feet down separates Pt. Fermin Park from the crashing waves of the Pacific. In the midst of huge Magnolia trees, LA's first lighthouse, incredible views of Catalina, whales, ships and coast is the home theater of Shakespeare By the Sea. On summer evenings made chilly by the offshore breeze is a night unequaled by the combination of natures splendor and man's culture. This night was Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew.

Clothing and period seemed to be 1930-ish, the contemporary setting added zest and enjoyment to the Bard's tale.

MLP Graduation '07 : Mary Lou graduated from Cerritos College with Highest Honors! Pretty good for anyone, but for a single parent with a teenage son still at home, working full time, this was especially satisfying.

Now the non-interesting stuff. The Commencement Ceremony was shot from the middle of the stadium about the 50 yard line with a Bigma on a 20D (Sigma 50-500). In addition to the playing field pitch there is a quarter mile track increasing the distance to the graduates. I am very impressed with the Bigma.

The battle is new with bits and pieces of the performance spread across the entire event.

Do Dah '06 - Faces : The Doo Dah is a spoof on the Rose Parade, held every year in Pasadena, California. This year I shot the parade differently. Instead of covering the parade like a journalist ... walking the parade ... getting shots from set-up to break-down ... I (and a few photogs from LAShooters) set up chairs at the turn, (there's only one turn), and I went for faces of people who came to me as opposed to me finding them.

As stated before, this is not a Do Dah Parade story but about people of the parade, participants and spectators ... all those around my little corner ... which I guess is still a story nonetheless. -G-

PS: It was a very very warm day ... with a photographically unforgiving overhead midday sun.

Day of the Dead : This is a Mexican Holiday, Aztec actually, for remembering those loved now departed. The Aztecs had a fixation with death much of which is reflected in the modern holiday. Traditionally it starts with a village procession, the graves are fixed up and decorated, an altar in the home displaying flowers, photos and objects the departed cherished, then a family meal is shared between the living and the dead. The first day of activities is to honor the departed children, The "Day of the Littel Angels". Hollywood has taken this holiday an extra step ... but the again that is Hollywood.

Las Posadas - 2006 : Originally, I intended just to shoot Las Posadas, a Mexican tradition which re-enacts the travels of Joseph and Mary as they sought out shelter on the night of Jesus' birth.

I realized that in many different ways Olvera Street, the first street of Los Angeles and location where settlers marched nine miles from nearby Mission San Gabriel, broke ground under a giant Oak Tree and created the City of Angels, and La Posada were similar.

The following images are of both Olvera Street and the Posada, a passing glimpse of a small fragment of Los Angeles and Mexico.

Faces of the OC Fair : Usually, when I photograph an event like the fair, I photograph it as a story. The photos required to tell the story may or may not reflect a personal interest. This time I just snapped a few shots which I found interesting. Maybe I was uninspired ... maybe I'm trying to shoot differently ... and maybe I'm just being lazy. I really liked the goats ... maybe one for the backyard ...
