Travel Town : Located in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California, Travel Town is a collection of trains in various stages of refurbishment. The trains are available to the public for inspection and just to climb over. I've been to travel town before and wanted to shoot something different than "just trains" (although trains are always cool.) So I went for color ... then I spotted the layers of paint on partially sanded cars.

Similar to clouds or a Rorschach ink blot test, one can see a variety of shapes in the images.

Photo Shopping was confined to contrast and lighten/darken to bring out the colors. No color manipulation or saturation was applied.

Mission San Juan Capistrano : Mission San Juan Capistrano, better known for its Swallows, is also the home of a Mariachi Competition. Groups from all over California compete by age groups for the title of The Finest Mariachi Band. This gallery has snaps of the Mariachis, the nearly 300 year old mission and of the 11th Marine Regiment from the 1st Marine Division. The 11th Regiment is based down the road a few miles from San Juan Capistrano at Camp Pendleton. The City of San Juan has adopted the 11th and has thrown a party for the Marines and their families on the same day of the Mariachi Festival. The 11th will be leaving for Iraq and the City throught a Bon Voyage party. In tribute to the Marines, many of the Mariachi bands entertained the Marines and their families after competing at the Mission. In this gallery I have included snaps of a few of the children.

Please take a minute and offer a quick thought and prayer wishing the Marines and all our service men in harms way ... a safe return.

Godspeed Marine.

Wisteria Festival - Sierra Madre : The Treasure of Sierra Madre lies not underground in gold veins but above ground with a lavender blooming vine. The largest vine in the world is celebrated once a year in the little foothill community of Sierra Madre, California.

The 100+ year old vine is now cared for by CalTech students and faculty located down the street in Pasadena.

Weighting in at 250 tons, this Wisteria vine lives in the backyard of several private homes. A few minutes north-east of Pasadena, Sierra Madre is nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains (the mountains you see as a backdrop to the Rose Pardae and Rose Bowl games.) The little town of 11,800 boasts of no traffic signals and only one fast food restaurant. The town takes pride in its old Victorian and Craftsman homes and the Oak tree lined streets creating a canopy of green.

Faces of the Getty Villa : The Getty Villa, overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, California, is home to J. Paul Getty's antiquities collection. The museum is modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, A Roman country house in Herculaneum buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79.

This gallery contains the faces of the Getty. Most of the faces shown are of people that were once flesh and bone, no different than ourselves. The faces had names, some were identified as the merchant's wife or the Senator's son. Each had a story and a lifeline of events, some events were good others tragic ... no difference than those living today.

Other faces are of Gods and mythological heros.

November 7 : Palos Verdes Peninsula
November 7, 2006.
77F, crystal blue sky, slight ocean breeze ... man what a place. There are days when you look around ... your eyes drink in the beauty of the ocean, cliffs, coves ... the sun warms your face and the sea breeze cools the body ... and you wish for time to stand still just so you can take your time and savor it all. Yesterday stood out because it is November ... where much of the rest of the Northen Hemispere has winter blowing down the street and knocking on the door ... I was basking in the warmth along the coast ... watching dolphins nose in and out of kelp and squadrons of pelicans gliding above the waves.

Funny thing, yesterday could have been a page out of September, July or May, it's all the same. In winter one can dive or surf in the morning, snow ski in the afternoon and have dinner in Hollywood. Almost makes up for the terrible traffic, horrible housing costs and endless jokes of Californians.

PS- There is a theory that had the Europeans landed on the West Coast instead of the East ... there would not had been any Manifest Destiny.
